Dubai Fashion Tour had a great opportunity to meet Zainab, the owner of The Bakhtz, and got her to share her journey in the Dubai fashion industry.

DFT – Can you tell us something about your brand and inspiration behind it?

Zainab – “Bakht” in Arabic means luck and it comes from my dad’s name. And the last letter ‘Z’ is from my name Zainab. The logo symbolizes luck in a lot of cultures. ‘Beauty which can achieved to show true colors’ – this is what it represents.

DFT – When did you know you wanted to be a fashion designer?

Zainab  I always had the heart of a designer. Professionally I started a year ago. Most of the women in Dubai go to souk to make the casual Emirati dress. From there I got introduced to colors, materials and how to make these dresses.

DFT – What skills according to you are necessary for a successful fashion designer?

Zainab – A fashion designer should be creative, confident and you should know her competitors always. Apart from that you should know and be familiar with the current trends. Communication skills are also very important. For me I put more emphasis on creativity and honesty when I sell my products.

DFT – What is your inspiration in general? What was your inspiration for the last season?

Zainab – Normally I get inspiration when I travel. I am so in love with architecture and I gain inspiration from streets, old boutiques in London. My designs are mostly inspired from forties and fifties museum interiors. The current collection was inspired from a museum I visited last summer.

DFT – How would you describe your design aesthetic?

Zainab – My designs are classy, elegant and simple. For me it’s all about simplicity. My designs are simple and brings out the figure of the woman. It’s the tailoring that makes it look simple, elegant and ready to wear.

DFT – Tell us about your latest fall 2016 collection and what’s the inspiration behind it?

Zainab – My designs and style are more feminine and modest. I believe everyone should be stylish at the end of the day and that’s how my pieces are designed. They go very well with Abaya. So I would describe my designs as feminine and modest in the fall collection. I got inspired from my last visit to Europe. It was actually from a museum I entered. I am very much into beautiful interior designs. It can be seen in the way the dresses I design are cut and tailored.

DFT – What is your upcoming project? Are you currently working on spring summer collection?

Zainab – I am currently in the process of designing my spring summer collection. I got the colors and everything else ready. It will be launched before or during ‘Eid as my customers tend to travel and they need new dresses during that time. I am going to have a photo shoot soon which will be featured in Instagram. I am currently showcasing in ‘The Fashion Vault’ in Jumeirah.

DFT – Describe the type of woman who would wear ‘The Bakhtz’?

Zainab – The type of women who usually wear my designs are smart women who knows how to balance between life and work. My customers are usually women in high positions based in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. My dresses can be worn for work and meetings. You can also add accessories to it. Normally it is designed for smart and confident women.

DFT – How do you market your business?

Zainab – My business is promoted mostly by word of mouth and social media. Social media adds a lot of value to my designs. I tend to get busy and become inactive in social media sometimes but I promise to be more active from now!

DFT – What do you think about Dubai fashion industry? Do you think it will become the next global fashion capital?

Zainab – Dubai is going to be the hub of fashion not only in the Middle East or MENA but the entire Islamic region. It will be a hub for not only modern fashion but also Islamic fashion as well. In Asia, Dubai is the best for fashion. Slowly it will take over countries like Paris and London and establish itself as the next global fashion capital.

DFT – What excites you about the potential for spaces like d3?

Zainab – I like the fact that spaces like d3 serve as a platform for new designers and help promote them based on interests.
